27Apr – Mont Saint-Michel/Mont d’Huisnes/Cancale

Saturday
Mont Saint-Michel

One more tick off the old medieval milestones list!

  • Notre-Dame de Paris – check
  • Chartres Cathedral – double-check
  • Mont Saint-Michel – check…finally.

There are 350 steps to the abbey church atop the mount–something I could not have even dreamed of considering without knee replacements. Out-of-shape considerations aside, the climb was painless…and well worth it.

Mont d’Huisnes German WWII Cemetery
Of course, there were casualties on all sides during war. The Battle of Normandy was no different. Here was a somber reminder before our upcoming visit to the Normandy beaches in a few days.

A German WWII cemetery in Brittany. Many of the markers were for unknown soldiers.

Cancale
And what better to lighten the mood but with oysters! Fresh from the sea, shucked and lemoned right on the dock and consumed raw in the brisk sea air. Yum.

Some of our party opted for ice cream instead.
